Sounds at levels below 75 dB are generally considered safe, even for prolonged exposure. The amount of damage depends on the loudness of the sound and the duration of exposure. The damage can be profound and immediate or gradual. Hearing lossĮxposure to loud sounds can cause hearing loss. Humans are actually somewhat better at telling loud sounds apart than quiet ones- the JND drops from about 1.5 dB at 40 dB to about 0.5 dB at 90 dB. The smallest difference that can be perceived is called a just noticeable difference (JND). For comparison, the “two jet” sound has a sound level that is only 3 dB more than the “one jet” sound. Most people have trouble telling which sound is louder when comparing sounds with levels that differ by less than 1 dB. Humans have trouble distinguishing between sounds with seemingly large differences in intensity- two jet planes don’t sound much louder than one. If the SPL of a sound is expressed relative to human threshold of hearing, but the SIL is expressed relative to the runway at JFK airport, the SPL and SIL won’t be equal. Negative elevation means you’re not quite at the top yet.Ĭan a sound have a negative sound level and still be heard? When is SIL different than SPL?Ī sound’s SIL and SPL are always equal, unless different reference levels are used. Everest, you might want to choose the top of Everest as the your reference level. But, in some contexts, you could choose to use some other reference. When Wikipedia gives the elevation on the floor of Death Valley as -86 meters, you assume the author means 86 meters below sea level. Elevations are relative to a reference level- almost always sea level. When this is done, it is usually safe to assume the reference is the threshold of hearing.Įlevation in geography works the same way. Decibel values for sounds are often given without a mentioning a reference level (like in the table above). For instance, recording engineers usually use the loudest sound that doesn’t cause distortion as the reference. Sometimes, other references are more convenient. The chart above uses the threshold of hearing as the reference sound. Sound levels show how a sound compares to a reference sound. The most commonly used reference sound is called the threshold of hearing– a barely audible pure tone at 1000 Hz that has a pressure amplitude of 20 μPa and an intensity of 1 pW/m 2. Every extra 10 dB corresponds to a sound that is ten times more intense than before.ĭoes a 60 dB sound have twice the intensity of a 30 dB sound? Sound levels are relative SoundĪ quick look at the chart reveals that sound level is very a different thing than sound intensity. (See chart below for sound levels for common sounds). Sound levelsare expressed in decibels. Sound levels for common sounds cover a range of about 130 dB. Sound pressure is not the same thing as sound pressure level and so on. No matter which term you use, the word “level” is crucial- sound intensity level is not the same thing as sound intensity. Many people use SIL and SPL interchangeably, while others use the phrase sound level instead. There are two common (nearly identical) log scales for expressing sound amplitude: s ound intensity level (SIL)and sound pressure level (SPL). Examples of logs in science include the pH scale (for acids and bases in chemistry), the Richter scale (for earthquakes) and decibel (for sound). Sound levels use the math of logarithms to compress these wide-ranging numbers into something manageable. The numbers are difficult to “grok” and even more inconvenient to work with. Loud sounds can have intensities that trillions of times that of quiet sounds. Sounds humans can tolerate sounds that have pressure amplitudes that are many millions of times larger than the quietest sounds we can hear. To assure Feyd's power, the Baron intends to install him as ruler of Arrakis after a period of tyrannical misrule by Rabban, making Feyd appear to be the savior of the people. įeyd is, for a while, the Baron's heir, or na-Baron. A year or two more - say, by the time he's seventeen, I'll know for certain whether he's the tool that House Harkonnen requires to gain the throne. There was a sharpness to the boy that the Baron enjoyed. But Rabban's younger brother, young Feyd-Rautha. Not this Rabban he'd summoned, of course. The Baron could see the path ahead of him. The Baron favors the handsome and charismatic Feyd over Feyd's older brother Glossu Rabban ("The Beast") because of Feyd's intelligence and his dedication to the Harkonnen culture of carefully planned and subtly executed sadism and cruelty, as opposed to Rabban's outright brutality. But where Paul displays compassion and loyalty, Feyd cares only for himself and the acquisition of power." Appearances Dune Īs Dune begins, Feyd-Rautha figures heavily in the Baron's plans to gain power for House Harkonnen. Ari Szporn of Comic Book Resources wrote, "Both are charismatic, cunning young noblemen who have received the greatest education and combat training. The character Feyd serves as a narrative foil to Paul Atreides, son of the Baron's enemy, Duke Leto Atreides. Feyd and his elder brother Glossu Rabban are the legal sons of Baron Harkonnen's youngest half-brother, Abulurd Rabban, who had "renounced the Harkonnen name and all rights to the title when given the subdistrict governorship of Rabban-Lankiveil". The Baron also notes that the "full and pouting look" of Feyd's lips is "the Harkonnen genetic marker". He is lean and muscular in contrast to his morbidly obese uncle, and is a deadly fighter. Sixteen-year-old Feyd, the younger nephew and heir of Baron Harkonnen, is described as dark-haired, and "round of face and with sullen eyes". Quicksave before engaging them in case the tower guard sounds the alarm. If you continue forward and upward to your right, you'll eventually reach another group of guards and another watchtower. You'll emerge on a hill on the other side of the guards you just left. Go through the door with the red light above it and continue until you reach a ladder heading up to the surface. Don't attack them yet, either - your job will get much easier shortly. Don't stand out in the open, or the two guards next to the truck will spot you. If you want, you can try to clear out the entire area, but it's not necessary - you can simply head down the tunnel and duck into the doorway with the red light above it. You can also get your Mauser back (your weapons were reset between missions), but you won't have a sniper scope for a while. When you get close to the second watchtower, quicksave and then take out the tower guard. Quicksave and head out of the cabin to the right - you're taking the long way around.īasically, you'll want to hug the right wall the entire way around the valley - if you try and go straight across, you'll be seen and the mission will end. Kill the guards in the immediate area and hide inside until you're sure the alarm won't be sounded. The trick here is to make sure they don't shoot at you - if they do, the guard in the tower in the distance will probably be alerted and sound the alarm. You'll find another cabin with a few more guards and officers. Head back across the water towards the cabin, and hug the right wall again. Quietly kill all three guards with your Sten and head over to the parachute drop site, which has some supplies (but not your Snooper). Stay to the right, and you can probably get right next to the cabin and listen to them speak - one of them has noticed a parachute caught in a tree across the water. Unfortunately, the other issue at Lowes is that no one who works there knows where anything is, so you are on your own to search for whatever you are looking for. Of course Lowes is like the supermarket - they move things around weekly so that you can never find what you are looking for - that way you are more likely to see something you didn't know you need until you actually see it. I bought a couple of rolls at Lowes - the first time it was on one of those 'appendage racks' added to the end of row in the floor covering department, but the next time I found it in with the other tapes and adhesives in the paint department. In one of his videos many years ago, Captain Eddy recommended Shurtape brand carpet tape. I'm getting so tired of this. The books say that you should never use 'carpet tape', but rather should use only fit-for-purpose turning tape. But in the main website summary explanation, tell me the obvious stuff: price, the main tape features. 0001% of the population that actually cares about that stuff about tape, just have it available in the specs pdf. Why they have paragraphs of scientific explanations that say nothing of interest is beyond me. There's only a few characteristics that distinguish one type of tape from another. They don't do all these bullshit things like most other companies do to hide the fact that their product is not up to snuff or overpriced or whatever the reason is.Īll I'm asking for is double-sided tape. I know the product name, I know what the differences are between models, and I know the price. I visit the apple site and all of my immediate questions are answered. I keep insisting: the reason why Apple is going to take over the consumer markets for whatever they make is because they pay attention to this stuff and just about all other companies do not. They just have forms to fill out so a rep can call you back. Last week, i was ranting about all the business software sites that NEVER clearly tell you what they are selling, nor do they have any prices. They need one of those comparison charts or something. They have dozens of tape types and you just can't tell what the differences are. They use words to describe the tapes that are strange enough where I just can't tell what they are selling. I can't tell at all if the tapes have a removable liner or not. They are very unclear.both the distributors and manufacturers. The problem is that I can't tell on the website what the heck kind of tape it is. Once I know the exact model of what I'm looking for, it will be easy. I think what I'm looking for falls under the double-coated category. It seems as though double-sided and double-coated might mean two different things, but hell if i can know for sure from anything i'm reading online. They go on and on about the tape strength and chemical properties, like I can understand or care about it, but about the actual tapes and what are the differences.barely anything. They write all sorts of BS information, but they avoid saying anything about what I really am looking for. They are never clear about what they are selling. Man, websites have been really bothering me lately. The descriptions were very unclear about this specific issue. I went to all the online stores and I also looked at the scotch 3m sites. The hard thing about all this on the internet is that the descriptions aren't clear at all about the liner and stuff. The foam ones all had it, but i don't want foam tape. I went to the store yesterday, but they only had double sided tapes with no removable liners. But I need to find the same for regular scotch tape. Now, it seems as though the foam tapes usually come with a liner on both sides (or at least one). Once it's rolled out, both sides are exposed. Actually, most normal double-sided tapes have no liners on either side. Would easily be a 5 star app if it was a LOT more user friendly. But it would sure be nice to know how to use it. This cautionary legend has proven its resilience against the passing of time, being reimagined and retold several times. Initially recorded in 60 BCE by Diodorus Siculus in his The Library of History, the most popular variation of the tale is written by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses in 8 CE. He is infamously known as the “boy who flew too high,” who crashed to earth after melting his waxen wings. 417).The story of Icarus has been told for centuries. For instance, Matisse’s painting Icarus is widely seen as an evocative image of twentieth-century warfare: the single red dot in the figure’s chest has been interpreted as ‘a modern pilot who has been shot down, and falls through a sky illuminated with flashes of gunfire’ (Kemp, 2002, p. Some of these new versions use the classical myth to communicate the universality of human emotions and suffering at the same time, they often update the details for a new contemporary audience. Another song from 2003 by the band Thrice focuses on Daedalus’ perspective on the tragedy with a track entitled ‘The Melting Point of Wax’. For example, popular contemporary music boasts a long list of Icarus references, from Joni Mitchell’s lyrics about airwoman Amelia Earhart (‘Amelia’, 1976), to Queen’s song, ‘No One But You (Only the Good Die Young)’ (1997). If you typed ‘Icarus’ into an internet search engine, this no doubt yielded a fascinating but random range of Icarus-related themes with plenty of examples from popular culture as well as more traditional ‘high’ arts. Icarus also regularly represents the alienation of the artist and the consequences of breaking out of boundaries, both cultural and social. Icarus has become a symbol for heroic daring (the crew of space shuttles that did not survive) but his flying and falling have been given a psychological timbre as well as a physical expression in all kinds of literature from poems to thrillers. Figure 2 Roman cast bronze figurine of Icarus flying, first to third century CE, height 11.5 cm, found in Crete.Īs both character and image, Icarus continues to turn up in unexpected places, from scientific papers to advertising. The right leg is broken at the mid-point of the calf, and the bronze of the whole figurine shows some slight weathering. His left leg is straight while his right is slightly bent, as if to indicate walking or flying. The muscles on his torso are clearly visible, and so are his genitalia. His hair is arranged in wavy clumps, and his face is unsmiling, with eyes fixed straight in front of him. His hands reach approximately three-quarters of the way along the wings. Two wings made of overlaying feathers sprout from his back, and these are positioned directly behind his arms. He stands with his arms outstretched, and his palms are both open. The figurine is shown naked apart from four bracelets, one at the top of each arm just below the shoulder, and one on each wrist. The photograph shows a bronze figurine of a man, displayed against a black background. Aphrodite punished Helios for his exposure of her affair with Ares by decreeing that the female descendants of the sun would select and pursue inappropriate and disastrous partners. These strange sexual couplings (or attempts at them – Phaedra is scorned and takes her revenge) stem from a curse on the descendants of the sun god, Helios. Another connected myth is that of the Cretan princess Phaedra, who later married Theseus (even though he had abandoned her sister, Ariadne, his guide through the Labyrinth), and developed a destructive and tragic passion for her stepson Hippolytus. The Cretan labyrinth also featured in the exploits of the Athenian hero, Theseus, who slew the Minotaur, the half-man, half-bull offspring of queen Pasiphaë, with the help of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos. Daedalus was himself effectively imprisoned on the island (the king barred his exit by sea) and so was unable to return with his son, Icarus, to Athens or find sanctuary away from the harsh regime at Crete. Icarus’ story connects up with a number of narrative passageways centred on the island of Crete (where Daedalus, the legendary artificer and craftsman, constructed a maze, the Labyrinth, to conceal and control the Minotaur). Icarus has become the more familiar of the two characters as the ancient high-flyer who fell from the sky when the wax that secured his wings was melted by the sun. The myth of Daedalus and Icarus, the father and son who escaped from the island of Crete on wings, is told in Book 8 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. |
